Judgment Day
Tuesday’s Verse:
From 1 John 4:17 NIV
“This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.”
For many, the "Day of Judgment" sounds like a terrifying final exam where every secret thought is graded. We naturally look inward, tallying our failures and wondering if we’ve done "enough" to pass.
However, a Lutheran perspective shifts the gaze from our performance to Christ’s person. St. John tells us that love is "perfected" with us. This doesn’t mean we have become morally flawless people; it means God’s love has reached its intended goal in us. That goal is our complete assurance.
The heart of our confidence lies in a "happy exchange." In our Baptism, Christ took our sin and gave us His status.
Christ’s Status: He sits at the right hand of the Father, beloved, righteous, and holy.
Our Status: Because we are "in Christ," the Father looks at us and sees the same righteousness He sees in His Son.
We don't have to wait until we die to find out where we stand with God. John uses the present tense: we are as He is, right now, in this world. When you stand before the judgment seat, you aren't standing on your own record; you are standing in His.
If the Day of Judgment happened this afternoon, would you rely on your "good day" or on Christ’s eternal "Finished"? True peace comes from realizing that the Judge is also your Savior, and He cannot condemn the righteousness that He Himself gave to you.
✝️ A Prayer for Today:
Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not leave us to tremble at the thought of Your judgment. Fill us with the peace of Your perfected love, that we may live in this world with heads held high, knowing that in Christ, we are already welcomed and loved. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
