Speaking the Truth in Love
Thursday’s Verse:
From Ephesians 4:15 ESV
“Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.”
There are too many times in our lives when we can see people’s hearts harden. When politics or public figures come up, it doesn’t take much for conversations to turn sharp. You felt that edge. It hurt.
Saint Paul’s words in Ephesians don’t deny that truth matters. Truth does matter. Lutherans care deeply about that. We confess Christ plainly. We stand on God’s Word. But notice what Paul ties to truth: love.
Truth without love becomes a weapon.
Love without truth becomes empty.
In Christ, they belong together.
Jesus never separated the two. He spoke truth that cut to the heart. And He loved all the way to the cross. Even for people who misunderstood Him. Even for people who hated Him.
That includes us.
It’s worth remembering: your peace does not depend on the tone of the culture around you. It depends on Christ, who is the Head. The verse says we are growing “into him.” That means your maturity is not measured by winning arguments or fixing the mood of a room. It’s measured by being shaped more and more into Jesus.
You cannot control the bitterness you encounter.
But you can control the spirit you carry.
When others speak with anger, you can answer gently.
When others assume the worst, you can assume humanity.
When others divide, you can quietly reflect Christ.
That is growth. That is strength. That is Lutheran theology lived out in ordinary conversations.
And here is the comfort: Christ is patient with you, too. On days when your own heart flares up, He does not cancel you. He forgives you. He keeps forming you. He keeps drawing you into Himself.
So today, you don’t have to carry the weight of the nation’s tone. Lay it down. You belong to Jesus. He is not anxious. He is not shaken. He reigns.
Let that steady you.
✝️ A Prayer for Today:
Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Truth, and You are Love. Guard my heart from bitterness. Give me courage to speak clearly and kindness to speak gently. When the world feels loud and divided, root me more deeply in You. Make me an instrument of Your peace. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
