Jesus Gives Us Life
Friday’s Verses:
From 1 Peter 2:2-3 ESV
“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.”
Peter paints it plainly for us here. A newborn baby does not convince itself to eat. Hunger is instinctual. So is crying. So is reaching toward that which gives life.
So is faith.
We are not naturally hungry for God. We busy ourselves. We fill our lives with distractions until we forget how to listen for His voice. But the Spirit creates new cravings in us. God brings us to new life through the Gospel. And now we begin to yearn for that which truly satisfies.
Peter refers to God’s Word as “pure spiritual milk.” Milk untouched by human philosophy. Milk we did not earn through works. Christ feeds His sheep through preaching, through Scripture, through Baptism, and through the Lord’s Supper. And He does not wait until we are strong. He feeds us that we may become strong.
Notice also why there is this yearning. “You have tasted that the Lord is good.” Christianity is not based on blind hope. It is built upon the solid goodness of God displayed in His Son. We have tasted His grace in forgiveness. We have tasted His faithfulness in His promises kept. We have tasted His love upon the cross.
And so we come back to His Word again and again. Not because we have to, but because we need to. Not to earn heaven, but to mature in the life we already have.
May you hear this promise today as comfort. If you feel weak in your faith, it does not mean you are disqualified. Weak faith still yearns for Christ. And Christ is still feeding you.
✝️ A Prayer for Today:
Lord Jesus, You are good, and Your mercy has extended to me. Stir in me a greater hunger for Your Word. Strengthen my faith by nourishing me through Your promises, and teach me to grow in the salvation You have already given me. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
