You Are Justified
Holy Wednesday’s Verse:
From Isaiah 50:9a ESV
“Behold, the Lord God helps me; who will declare me guilty?”
Holy Week places us between accusation and vindication. “Behold my helper,” the Servant confidently whispers in this verse. No accusation will prevail.
Two thoughts on this verse direct us to Christ.
Christ was accused at His trial. There were false witnesses. Angry mobs yelled out. Even His silence on certain charges was considered a form of guilt. And still, the truth stood firm: The Lord your God would be His helper.
Notice how the same promise applies to us.
We know how accusation stings. Sometimes from others. Other times, from our own conscience. When sin whispers in our ear or the law declares truthfully what we have done, we cannot ignore it.
Yet Isaiah doesn’t give us permission to claim innocence. Instead, he tells us where to look for help.
Lutherans know that our confidence is not in our own explanations. It is in Christ’s. Jesus Christ bore our accusations on the cross. And God declared Him righteous by raising Him from the dead.
And that declaration is now ours as well.
When someone asks, “Who will declare me guilty?” You can respond. “No one,” not because there is no evidence, but because no accusation can stand against what God has already declared about us in Christ.
You are justified.
Not because of what you did, but because of what Christ did in your place.
✝️ A Prayer for Today:
Lord Jesus Christ, when others accuse me, let me remember that You are my helper. Give me confidence not in my own explanations, but in Yours. Strengthen my faith this Holy Week. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
