Never Let Evil Win Your Heart
Tuesday’s Verse:
From Romans 12:21 ESV
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
It doesn’t take much to see evil at work in the world. Harsh words, bitterness, division, revenge, and selfishness seem to come naturally to sinful hearts. And if we’re honest, we often feel tempted to answer hurt with hurt.
But Saint Paul points Christians in another direction.
He does not tell us to pretend evil doesn’t exist. He tells us not to let it win. Evil wins whenever it pulls us into hatred, vengeance, or despair. That is exactly what sin wants to do.
Instead, Paul says: “overcome evil with good.”
That kind of goodness does not come from human strength or positive thinking. It comes from Christ Himself. Jesus overcame the evil of sin, death, and the devil, not by revenge, but through His cross. While the world mocked Him, He forgave. While sinners rejected Him, He died for them. His resurrection now gives His people a new heart and a new way to live.
Because Christ has shown mercy to us, we are free to show mercy to others. We answer anger with patience. We answer cruelty with kindness. We answer darkness with the light of Christ.
As this weekend showed us, rain eventually gives way to sunshine. In the same way, the goodness of Christ shines through His people in a weary world.
✝️ A Prayer for Today:
Lord Jesus Christ, when evil and bitterness surround us, keep us from being overcome by sin. Fill us instead with Your mercy, patience, and goodness. Help us reflect Your love in our words and actions, through the power of Your Holy Spirit. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
