An Abundant Life in the Good Shepherd
Today’s Verse:
John 10:10 ESV
(Jesus said) “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
In this powerful verse, Jesus starkly contrasts the destructive work of the "thief" and His life-giving purpose. The thief, often understood as referring to Satan, false teachers, or anything that draws us away from God, seeks to diminish, corrupt, and ultimately destroy our lives. We see this played out in the world and even within ourselves through sin, despair, and brokenness.
But then comes the glorious counterpoint: "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." This isn't just about existing; it's about a rich, full, and meaningful existence. This "abundant life" is inextricably linked to our faith in Jesus Christ. It's a life lived in grace, forgiven and redeemed through His sacrifice on the cross.
What does this abundant life look like in our daily lives? It's not necessarily a life free from problems or suffering. Rather, it's a life infused with peace that surpasses understanding, even in the midst of trials. It's a life of purpose, knowing God loves and calls us. It's a life overflowing with hope, because our ultimate future is secure in Him. It's a life of service, empowered by the Holy Spirit to share God's love with others.
As you go about your Tuesday, remember that the Good Shepherd has come not to take away but to give. He offers you life—a life truly worth living, a life abundant in His grace and truth. Let us cling to this promise today, trusting that He will lead us beside still waters and restore our souls.
.Prayers
A Prayer for Today:
Gracious God, thank You for sending your Son, Jesus, who came that we might have life and have it abundantly. Forgive us for the times we have allowed the thief to steal our joy and peace. Fill us with your Holy Spirit so we may live fully in the abundant life You offer, walking in Your grace and sharing Your love with those around us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
