Compromising Our Christian Faith
Friday’s Verse:
From Daniel 1:12 ESV
“Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.”
Go ahead. Eat bacon. I won’t tell.
I will not be joining you as you chomp down your BLT.
However, being vegan isn’t weird.
A diet restricted to plants, with no meat, fish, or dairy products. It’s not some hipster craze.
Daniel and his friends found themselves living far from home in a pagan country. Everywhere they turned, there were pressures to compromise: different customs, different education, different food, powerful influencers. Daniel knew that loyalty to God was more important than assimilation into Babylonian culture.
What I love about this verse is Daniel’s matter-of-fact confidence. He doesn’t rage against the system. Daniel doesn’t puff himself up in pride. He humbly and respectfully makes his request. He trusts that the Lord will provide for him, even in this strange situation.
I feel that way sometimes as a Christian in the U.S. Sure, we’re not in Babylon…but we do live in a world that tempts us to compromise with sin, or stay silent about the truth, or trust in ourselves rather than God. We are called to be faithful where God has planted us.
But here is where we can take comfort. Daniel’s faithfulness points us to Christ. Jesus was faithful to his Father in every temptation. Where we fall short, Christ stands firm on our behalf. Because of His death and resurrection, we are forgiven and empowered to live as God’s people in this world.
Faithfulness is sometimes dramatic. Most times it’s ordinary: taking time to pray, speaking truth in love, saying no to temptation, and trusting God to supply our needs.
✝️ A Prayer for Today:
Lord God, You kept Daniel faithful in a difficult place. Strengthen me to trust You when I face pressure to compromise. Forgive my failures for the sake of Jesus Christ, and help me live each day with quiet confidence in Your care. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
