God’s Mercy Rests for Us In Jesus
Sunday’s Verse:
From Hosea 6:6 ESV
“For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.”
As we prepare for difficult days, we often believe God is most pleased by our efforts, discipline, service, or endurance. Yet through Hosea, the Lord reminds us that He first desires mercy and the knowledge of God.
This verse does not reject worship or obedience but teaches that acts mean little if separated from faith in the God who saves. The Lord desires hearts that trust Him, receive His mercy, and show that mercy to others.
For Lutherans, this points directly to Christ. We do not earn God's favor through sacrifices, accomplishments, or intentions. Instead, God comes to us in grace, forgiving our sins through Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. We are justified by faith, receiving what we could never achieve on our own.
When facing uncertainty, illness, or surgery, this comforts us. God's love is not based on our strength, bravery, or endurance. His mercy rests on His promise in Christ.
Today, you do not need to make a great sacrifice. Simply come to God as His child, trusting His goodness and receiving His care.
✝️ A Prayer for Today:
Merciful Father, You desire steadfast love and the knowledge of Your grace. Thank You for sending Your Son to save me, not because of my works, but because of Your mercy. As I look toward the days ahead, strengthen my faith, calm my fears, and remind me that I belong to You. Grant wisdom to those who care for me, healing according to Your will, and confidence in Your promises. Through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
