We Are Already His

Wednesday’s Verse:

From Romans 6:11 ESV

“So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

For some reason, my cancer treatment on Tuesdays makes me feel worse than on the other days during the week. I don’t get anything special - treatment is all the same. Yet for the past month, my Tuesday treatments have made me feel completely wiped out. Yesterday was no different.

My energy was zapped. Any urge to do anything for anyone was nonexistent.

As I sat down at my computer, I read an email from a pastor I know. His closing signature to his email had three Bible verses, and one of them was from Romans 6. Verse 11 of Romans 6 is not a command to work harder for God’s favor. It is comfort: in Christ, your old sinful self has been put to death, and your new life is already hidden in Him.

Being tired - both physically and emotionally after treatment - this verse rings true. When you are wiped out by life’s challenges and don’t want to do anything to help anyone, that doesn’t nullify our Baptism or God’s grace. We’ve already been claimed by Jesus. He continues to hold you as one who is dead to sin and alive to God. The Christian life begins each day not with self-improvement, but with resting in what Jesus has done.

In Christ, we are already His.

✝️ A Prayer for Today:

Lord Jesus, when I am exhausted and empty, remind me that I am alive to You by Your grace alone. Quiet my heart, forgive my sins, and give me restful sleep in the peace of Your finished work. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
