The Lord Has Come Near Us
Wednesday’s Verse:
From 2 Samuel 7:22 ESV
“Therefore you are great, O Lord God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.”
David’s prayer begins where faithful prayer always begins: not with ourselves, but with God’s greatness. After hearing the Lord’s promises, David does not boast in his own faithfulness; he marvels at God’s mercy and uniqueness. The heart of the verse is worship—God is unlike all other so-called gods, because He alone acts, speaks, and saves.
For Lutherans, this verse is a good reminder that our comfort rests in God’s character, not our performance. David praises the Lord because God has freely made promises and kept them, and that is the way of grace: God gives before we can earn, and He remains faithful when we are not. In Christ, the Son of David, God’s promise becomes even clearer, because the Lord who is “great” has come near to us in the Savior who fulfills His word.

Lord God, You alone are great, and there is none like You. Teach us to rest in Your promises, rejoice in Your mercy, and praise You with humble hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
