A Good Faith

Today’s Verse:

Hebrews 11:1 ESV

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

You may not always feel like a faithful person. You may think your faith is too weak. Yesterday after treatment, I honestly admit that my faith wasn’t very strong. I was kind of grumpy. That is why in our reading today in our Hebrews’ passage, we’re reminded that it doesn’t have to be “good faith” to be faith. We can take hold of God’s promises in the present because He never fails. That’s all faith is.

It was faith that Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, and so many others clung to when God’s promises were not yet fulfilled in their lifetime.

So if you’re tired, discouraged, or don’t see the end in sight…Faith trusts God and God’s Word. It doesn’t give up.

These faithful saints “desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one” (v. 16).

They never looked back in regret, but they all looked forward in hope.

And that’s where we look. Not to our feelings. Not to our circumstances. But to Jesus (who is “the founder and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2)).

Whether your steps are light and springy or dragging today, don’t grow weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9). God isn’t ashamed to be called your God (Hebrews 13:5). He is preparing for you a city. An eternal city. A secure city. A city filled with the glory of God.

Prayers

A Prayer for Today:

Lord God, strengthen my faith today. When I grow weary, remind me of Your promises. Help me trust not in what I see but in what You have spoken through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Keep my eyes fixed on the better country You have prepared for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
