The $20 Burrito Debate
Thursday’s Verse:
From 2 Corinthians 5:7 ESV
“For we walk by faith, not by sight”
If you’ve been hiding under a rock this week, allow me to fill you in: there’s been a lot of conversation online about folks not being able to afford a $20 burrito.
Simplified, it’s not really about one burrito. It’s about skyrocketing food costs and that sinking feeling of monthly expenses dragging us down. Heck, if you can afford a $20 burrito, more power to you!
But for many, the prices for almost everything are too high right now. We may crave a steak dinner, but our budgets only allow for a hamburger from the Value Menu. Growing up, I ate a lot of packaged ramen noodles—not from a trendy noodle bar, but the cheap supermarket packs with the extra-salty seasoning. Looking back, it taught me something vital: God’s people have always had to navigate lean seasons, but we never navigate them alone.
There are days when the path ahead feels heavy and uncertain. We may not see how the budget will stretch to cover food or rent, how grief will ease, or how God can bring good out of difficulty. Our sight is easily limited by anxiety and the burdens of today.
Yet Christ calls us to walk by faith, not by sight. Faith is not pretending that struggles aren't real or that answers are simple. Faith is trusting that, in Jesus, God is present and faithful even when we cannot see the whole road ahead. Through Christ’s cross and resurrection, God has already shown that hardship and uncertainty never have the final word.
We walk forward not because we control tomorrow, but because we belong to the One who holds it. In Baptism, God has claimed us as His own; in the Word, He speaks lasting promises; and in Holy Communion, Christ feeds and strengthens us. Step by step, the Holy Spirit gives us precisely what we need for this day.
So whether dinner is a feast or a small package of ramen, we can take heart. God is faithful, He is with us, and He will carry us through.
✝️ A Prayer for Today:
Gracious Lord, when I cannot see the way ahead, strengthen me to trust Your promises. Keep my eyes fixed on Christ, remind me of Your daily provision, and lead me to walk faithfully in Your love. Amen.
