A Weekend of Purpose in Jesus

Today’s Verse:

Hebrews 13:8 ESV

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

The weekend is almost here and the world is still turning—scandals and headlines and everything else we deal with this week including life in your own little world of ups and downs and heartaches. Some things will change quickly. Too quickly. But here’s a verse to chew on this weekend: Jesus never changes. Doesn’t flex. Doesn’t grow weary. The Word of Christ stands, even when everything else falls apart.

This world is a storm this week. Something at work went wrong. Kids are crazy. We’re spread too thin. God’s not aloof, from on high, the Christ is unmoving. And in Christ you have an anchor. An anchor that’s not a cliché or bandaide. Not some trite verse that tells you everything is going to be fine. But the solid, strong, living God who put up with the cross for you—and is alive forevermore to guarantee your future.

Luther talks a lot about sola fide. Faith alone. Not faith in results. Not faith in our response to situations. Faith in the Christ who grips you. That’s how we stand, when everything else around us is sinking sand.

So this weekend, instead of spinning out in busy-ness or trying to medicate the white noise, come home to this unchanging grace. Come to the Word. Rest in the Word. Let Christ set you back at center stage.

Prayers

A Prayer for Today:

Lord Jesus, Thank You for never changing. Thank You for being the same—faithful, merciful, and near—even when I’m tired, overwhelmed, or uncertain. Forgive me when I chase other things for comfort. Remind me this weekend that I belong to You. Help me find rest, joy, and purpose in Your presence. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
