When We Refuse To Listen
Tuesday’s Verse:
From Jeremiah 8:5 ESV
“Why then has this people turned away in perpetual apostasy? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return.”
Jeremiah 8 is a sobering chapter. It carries a particular weight because Judah had been graciously warned; God had clearly revealed His heart and His justice. He called them to repentance and showed them where their paths would lead, yet they remained unyielding.
Their struggle was not a lack of information or knowledge of the Lord. Rather, it was a profound stubbornness of heart. They possessed the truth, but they would not permit that truth to lead them to obedience.
Tragically, they cherished their own desires more than they loved God's ways.
Our struggle with sin is not merely a series of occasional bad choices. Scripture reveals a deeper depravity: left to our own devices, our hearts naturally harden against God as we attempt to establish ourselves as our own ultimate authority.
Yet, the message of Jeremiah does not terminate with the announcement of judgment. We see a God who does not abandon us when we become stubborn and wayward.
Instead, in His infinite mercy, He pursues us.
God did not give up on Judah, and He does not give up on us. He continues to call us to turn from our destructive paths. Centuries after Jeremiah’s warning, He sent His Son into this rebellious world—not to condemn a people who refused to listen, but to save those who desperately needed a Rescuer.
Jesus Christ died on the cross for stubborn hearts like ours. He died for those of us who wander, resist, and choose our own way time and again. He bore our guilt and rose from the grave so that our hardened hearts could be softened and made right with God.
Therefore, when God’s Word convicts you today, do not harden your heart. Listen and repent. Remember that God is calling you back to Himself—not to condemn you as your sins deserve, but to restore you as His beloved child.
✝️ A Prayer for Today:
Almighty Father, forgive us when we insist on doing things our way. Create in us hearts that are humble and quick to listen to Your Word. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
