The Meek are Happy
Wednesday’s Verse:
From Matthew 5:5 ESV
(Jesus said) “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”
Yesterday, I had my chemo infusion at home. Apparently, I looked bad enough to the nurses who came by for my birthday on Monday that they insisted on rescheduling my treatment. While the chemotherapy was dripping away, the nurse who brought the medication asked me a question about, of all things, the Beatitudes.
“Pastor, what does it mean that the meek will inherit the earth?”
I reminded her that the Beatitudes all begin by calling people “Blessed,” a word that can be defined as “happy.” Being meek, therefore, doesn’t mean a person is weak. It shows humility.
I tend to view the Beatitudes in the important context that being blessed means God’s people are living their faith in Christ, and thus are happy. Not that cheap kind of happiness where you are having a good day, or everything worked out the way you wanted. They are happy because they know they are Christ's. They have the assurance of their Father's word.
The meek are happy because they know that there is strength in being humble and letting God lead their ways. You don't have to fight for yourself; you know that Jesus bought you and forgave you. So what do you have to worry about?
Jesus showed us that. He was gentle, but he loved. He stood up for what was right and died for us. Giving us an inheritance that cannot be taken away.
They say if you're strong-willed and pushy, you're happy. But Jesus said no; those who are gentle will be happy. Because they know that they will inherit the kingdom. The world one day will be theirs because their King is alive.

Heavenly Father, help me be meek as I live this life and show the importance of believing in Your Son, my Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
