Holy, Holy, Holy
Thursday’s Verse:
From Isaiah 6:3 ESV
And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”
As we sing the Sanctus, we are adding our small voice to the great song of the angels above. “Holy, holy, holy.” What Isaiah saw and heard he now proclaims as well. For just a second, our worship echoes what happens before the throne of God.
God's holiness is frightening to Isaiah at first. He sees the Lord and realizes how sinful he is. “I am a man of unclean lips.” However, God doesn't want Isaiah to stay there. God sends one with a burning coal and a message of forgiveness. “Your sin is forgiven.” It wasn't something Isaiah did to earn forgiveness. God gave it to him.
The same thing can happen in our worship as well. When we sing “Holy, holy, holy,” we aren't doing it because we are good enough to stand before God. We can praise him because he is willing to meet with sinners. We will soon partake of the Holy Communion and remember the one who will give us his body and blood to atone for our sins. Though he is holy, he will draw near to us through his Son to save us.
We can sing “Holy, holy, holy,” knowing that the Lord, who has glory filling all the earth, will forgive us our sins.
Today’s Prayers
Lord, we come before you knowing that we have sinned against you. Forgive us and allow us to come before you without fear. Give us the ability to praise you and proclaim your name to those around us. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
