Today Our Country Celebrates Columbus Day

Monday’s Verses:

From Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Today our country celebrates Columbus Day. It is a day when we commemorate Christopher Columbus and his crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in 1492.  As Christians, we can learn from Columbus's example as he traveled into the unknown.

Life can be a journey into the unknown. We all dream and make plans.  Sometimes we know what lies ahead, and other times we don't. We sail on smooth seas some days, and some days we encounter a storm.

We, as Christians, have something better than a compass. We have the Word of our Lord. Proverbs tells us to trust in the Lord with all your heart and not to lean on your own understanding. Of course, there will be rough patches along the way, but God will carry us through.

Jesus is the perfect example of this.  Our Lord gave us a way to Heaven that we could never discover on our own. It's not because of our courage or what we discover that we are saved, but because of what our Lord has done for us.

Columbus searched for a new path.  We don't have to search for a path to heaven. Jesus told us, "I am the way, the truth, and the life".

May we enjoy our journey and remember that our journey isn't about where we end up but who we end up with.

Let's all celebrate this Columbus Day knowing that our journey will lead us to our great discovery of Eternal life.

Today’s Prayers

Dear Lord, thank You for our journeys.  Help us to trust in You when our future seems uncertain. May we always keep our focus on Jesus, our Lord and Savior. He has given us life everlasting through His death and resurrection. In His name we pray. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
