Jesus is Lord

Monday’s Verses:

From Philippians 2:9-11 ESV

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

On Sunday, while we were in church in the morning, the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets faced off in London. Well, if you are a Jets’ fan, the day wasn’t a great. When I left church, I turned on WFAN radio and listened to an endless stream of anger towards the Jets’ team and organization.  As a Giant’s fan, I’m still living off the good feelings from the G-men overtaking the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday. But what I thought of was not the ugliness of the Jets’ offense, but a photo I found on X - a picture of Jets’ quarterback Justin Fields wearing a shirt reminding us of Philippians 2:9-11.

Jesus Christ is not just above the depth chart, He is above everything. Not just better, but exalted. Not just a familiar name, but the only name that saves.

Saint Paul makes this point to us in verses 5-7. Jesus’ exaltation is about more than honor. It is about His authority. All knees will bow. All tongues will confess. All of creation will be under His rule. Jesus is no pretender to the throne. He’s not waiting to be made king. He already is.

He purchased that throne not by winning the game, but by humbling Himself to the point of death — even death on a cross (v.8). This is the Lord we worship: crucified in weakness, raised in power, reigning in glory.

So what does this have to do with us?

It means that Jesus is still Lord when your team loses. He’s still Lord when life lets you down. He’s still Lord when your name is forgotten — because His name never will be.

Whether in the sanctuary or on Sunday’s sidelines, we all confess this one thing above all: Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Prayers

A Prayer for Today:

Lord Jesus, You are exalted above every name. May our hearts bow before You in reverence, trust, and joy. Reign in our lives today — in victory and in defeat — and keep us focused on Your glory, not our own.  Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
