I AM WHO I AM

Tuesday’s Verse:

From Exodus 3:14 ESV

God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”

God doesn’t give Moses a dissertation. He doesn’t submit a curriculum vitae or provide an operating manifesto. He gives a name: I AM. That’s it.

It’s not an avoidance of clarity. It’s a total statement of finality. God is saying: I exist, I am what I am, and I am completely independent from anything or anyone else. He is not contingent. He does not need to be explained. He does not develop. He does not try to keep up with the times. He just is.

This is big. This is especially big when things around us are swirling or when we find ourselves feeling unsteady on our feet. The God who commissions Moses is not a God among other gods. He is the always God. He is the God in the present tense. He does not say I was or I could be. He is I AM.

It is, for us as Christians, all the more pressing when we hear what Jesus says in John 8: 58: “Before Abraham was, I AM.” He is not simply pointing to God, the great I AM. He is God in the flesh, the very same unchanging I AM who appeared to Moses in the burning bush. He comes to us in fire, yes, but also in grace—in water, in Word, in bread and wine.

So when you don’t know who you are, or when everything else around you seems to be changing, be sure to remember who He is: I AM. And He is for you.

Prayers

A Prayer for Today:

Dear Lord, You are who You are—unchanging, eternal, and faithful. When I feel lost or unsure of myself, remind me that You are. Help me not to trust in me, but in You, the great I AM. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
