God Delights in Truth Tellers
Wednesday’s Verse:
From Proverbs 12:22 ESV
“Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who act faithfully are his delight.”
Truth is under siege these days.
Newspapers yell at each other. Public servants duel over facts. Headlines differ. Stories—like the one the Washington Post just ran and its reporting on Secretary of War Pete Hegseth—get us to question whom we can believe at all.
Scripture is not naïve to this. Proverbs cuts right to the heart of it:
“Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who act faithfully are his delight.”
The first half of the verse is not hard to follow: God hates lies. He hates them because they rend and unravel his good creation. Falsehood misrepresents reality. It wounds reputations. It corrodes trust. It blurs the line between real and unreal. Lies are not simply a failure of character—they are a spiritual attack on the God who is the truth.
But the second half of the verse casts a more radiant light:
“Those who act faithfully are His delight.”
Not His employees. Not His begrudging servants. His delight.
Faithfulness is not some dry virtue in Jesus Christ. It is the life of God imparted to us. Jesus is the Truth come in the flesh. He never altered, magnified, hid, or shaded. Even when the truth of who He is and what He came to do cost Him everything, He remained faithful to bring about our salvation. And by the power of Baptism and the Holy Spirit, He forms us into people whose words and actions display His integrity.
So when we find ourselves in a world where truth is politicized (whether in Washington politics, media sensationalism, or even ordinary, day-to-day conversations with friends and family), we do not respond cynically or with despair. Instead, we speak the truth in love, admitting when we do not know, declining to bear false witness, and rooting our hearts in the unchanging Word of God.
The world may play fast and loose with truth. The Lord does not. And He delights—DELIGHTS—in His people who speak truthfully, love rightly, and walk faithfully in Christ.
✝️ A Prayer for Today:
Lord Jesus, Truth made flesh, guard my lips from deceit and my heart from cynicism. In a world so full of confusion, anchor me in Your Word and make me faithful in all I say and do. Help me to reflect Your integrity so that others may see in me the peace and clarity that come only from You. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
