“Come, Lord Jesus” - One of the 7 Prayers God Loves to Answer

Saturday’s Verse:

From Revelation 22:20 ESV

He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

During the past week, we’ve reviewed seven of the prayers that God loves to answer. This Advent series directed our hearts to deeper prayer reflection and hope.

Most of us learned this prayer around the dinner table. It’s a simple enough prayer for a child to pray. But there’s a weight to it that will be with us for the rest of our lives. When we pray, “Come, Lord Jesus,” we’re praying for what God loves to give: his own presence.

In Scripture, Jesus doesn’t wait for us to climb the ladder to him. He descends to us. He comes to us in his birth, taking on our flesh. He comes to us in his Word, speaking forgiveness to ears that still scarcely believe it. He comes to us in the Supper, placing his body and blood into the hands of people who can scarcely keep their lives in order. And he promises to come again, not in weakness, but in glory.

So when we pray, “Come, Lord Jesus,” we’re praying according to his own heart. We’re asking him to do what he already delights to do.

Come into this moment.

Come into this home.

Come into this worry that I’ve been carrying.

Come into this world that seems more and more broken each day.

And one day, come and make all things new.

Luther wrote that the Christian life is simply a life of receiving. We don’t have to climb the ladder to God. Christ comes down to us. And so this little prayer trains us to look for him and to expect him and to welcome him.

Today, let this prayer be more than a mealtime habit. Let it be a steady rhythm: “Come, Lord Jesus.” He hears this prayer. He answers this prayer. And he loves to be near his people.

✝️ A Prayer for Today:

Lord, I come to You with an open heart. Fill me with Your Spirit where I am empty. Fill me with Your peace where I am anxious, with Your courage where I am afraid, and with Your forgiveness where I have failed. Let what You pour into me spill out into the lives of others. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
