The Word Has Become Flesh
Wednesday’s Verse:
From John 1:14 ESV
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Christmas Eve can be a silent kind of night. We know the story. The manger. The shepherds. The angels. Because we know it, sometimes we skim over it. But the story always calls us back. Invites us to slow down. To listen again.
God comes not as we expect. Not in power. Not in a show. Not with strings attached. He comes in the form of a child who must be swaddled and fed and kept safe. The eternal Word enters our world small and vulnerable. Not by mistake. But by the Gospel.
The Law reveals to us how far from God we are apart from Him. We desire power. Certainty. Evidence. Christmas reveals to us that God Himself makes up the distance. He comes to us where we actually are. In the dark. In the mundane. In need.
Luther once said God is always found where we least expect to find Him. Tonight is no exception. Christ is not born in a palace but in a stable. He is wrapped not in splendor but in cloth. And this child is the Savior of the world. Forgiveness has a heartbeat. Grace has a face.
Christmas Eve does not require us to be made right before God comes. Christmas Eve reminds us that God came, that God has come for sinners. For the weak. For the weary. For the doubters. For the faithful.
So tonight we rest. We receive. The Word has become flesh for us.
✝️ A Prayer for Today:
Lord Jesus, You came not in might but in mercy. Quiet our hearts. Help us to receive Your gift with faith and thanksgiving. Be born among us again in Your Word, and keep us in Your grace. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
