How We Should Pray

Monday’s Verse:

From Psalm 25:5 ESV

“Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.”

This prayer is spoken by someone who already belongs to God. David does not ask to find salvation, but to be led by the God who has already saved him. That matters. In the Lutheran confession, we do not come to God as learners trying to earn our place. We come as redeemed sinners asking to be shaped by the truth we have received.

God’s truth is His revealed Word. The same God who saves us freely for Christ’s sake also instructs us in how we should live as the forgiven. We are wanderers left to ourselves. Our hearts drift toward fear, pride, or trust in ourselves. So we pray, “Lead me.” Faith does not walk by itself.

There is also a tone of patience in this verse: “for you I wait all the day long.” Waiting is difficult because we hate to give up control. But waiting on the Lord is not wasted time. Waiting on the Lord is time spent trusting that the Lord is working through His Word preached and taught to us. He is working through the water and the bread and wine. He is working through His Word even when we are slow to learn.

This verse instructs us in how we should pray every day: Lord, keep me in the truth You have already given to me. Teach me again what I have forgotten. Lead me in ways that I would not go on my own. You are the God of my salvation. I will wait for You.

✝️ A Prayer for Today:

Lord God, You have saved me by grace alone. Lead me in Your truth, teach me by Your Word, and keep me faithful in my belief. Let me wait on You in trust, through Jesus Christ, my Savior. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
